Ohio’s Governor issued a stay-at-home order effective March 23rd in response to the Coronavirusdisease. And as a result, changing life as we know it. We are all feeling the effects of COVID-19. We are working from home, social distancing, and even homeschooling our children. The vast majority of us have never had to live through, or even think about, a pandemic. But here we are. I believe 2020 and the COVID-19 pandemic will shape our future. In other words, our future will be defined by how we come together as a community.
In the midst of social distancing and isolation from friends and family, I have focused on self-care and journaling. As I often do when faced with challenging times or a significant event I started putting my thoughts on paper. As a result, my thoughts started to take shape and I ended up with a piece I am calling “What If“.
I am in my safe haven; the place that calms me and where I run when the world gets too hard. The place I call home. I look at the beautiful blue sky from my window and listen to the bird’s sing. I find myself immersed in thought and reflecting on what is happening to the world around me. I see so much fear, loneliness, anger, resentment, and enormous loss. Tragedy and sickness have immobilized our daily lives and face-to-face interactions. Consequently, creating a world that seems to be unsympathetic and desolate. I won’t lie, I too have found myself spiraling into darkness at times. As a result, my words became even more therapeutic.
What if we took this time to connect, to listen without distraction, to create, and inspire? What if we read, played and danced more? What if our children began to see us- truly see us? What if we learned to care about our neighbors or thank our grocery clerks? What if we learned to have compassion for everyone regardless of their race? What if we truly learned what it feels like to feel joy, happiness, strength, support, encouragement, peace, and of course love?
Just what if?
The world will heal and prevail but it is up to each one of us to determine how it will have changed. Will we be kinder, softer, and more grateful? Or, will we return to our mindless, dangerous, and prejudiced ways? I believe that together we have the power to not only overcome and recover but to emerge a more united and sympathetic mankind. So again, I challenge you………..
In the isolation of COVID-19 I pray for all of us. I hope each one of you finds happiness, contentment, health, and well being. So, the world can begin to heal. Today I dream of a world where we are all one and together we overcome.
